Yeah, you. If you're listening to this, I wanna hear about what kinda legends and stories your world has. I'm bored out of my damn mind and could use somethin' interesting to talk about.

Sometimes that's exactly what legends are. You feel like tellin' me, I'll listen.

Well, then.

[He clears his throat exaggeratedly, like some sort of old professor.]

A long, long time ago, by which I mean about two hundred years ago, the Earth was becoming too polluted and running out of natural resources. People both on the planet and in the colonies were suffering, for the first time since the Colony Wars. The Earth Federation had to do something, anything, to reduce the burden humanity caused, or else billions would have died.

So, of course, they decided to colonize Mars.

So there's this asshole and he's got a shitload of kids, right? Like a dozen kids. Just kids coming out his ears, I guess, so don't ask me why he kept having more, but hell, he did.

So up pops the thirteenth kid and he needs a godfather for him, so he picks up the kid and goes out onto the street looking because I dunno, apparently that's what you do when you're the lead guy in a story like this.

So wouldn't you know it, there's God on the road, because that makes sense, and He offers to be this kid's godfather, but the kid's dad goes, "Not a chance, You give to the rich and let the poor starve, so I don't want You as this kid's godfather".

Bet you can't see where this is going.

I don't know about legends, but I know plenty of stories. Like this one, it happened to the cousin of a guy I know while she was on vacation in Tijuana. You know, just going around, drinking overpriced margaritas, going to the beach, doing the whole tourist thing.

This was back in the day when you could do that without getting shot in the head by the drug cartels.

So while she's shopping, she sees this cute little stray dog. It follows her around, and it's all shaggy and scrawny so she feels sorry for it and feeds it little pieces of tortilla until it's her best friend. Then every day she's there, it meets her and follows her around. She loves the little guy, and when the vacation's over, she's gotta bring it back home.

Well, uh, there is a legend about the creation of the world I could talk about?

Okay. [He pauses a bit.] I guess... it's been a while since I heard the story, but, I'm sure I can remember some of it!

[She clears her throat.] ...In the beginning of the world, there was nothing but a dark mist, called the nothingness. And then, god appeared. By being there, he brought light into the nothingness.

[It's not everyday she's recited this story.] When god... took into his hand the halo glowing over his head, and held it high, it became the sun. God waved his staff, and ripped the nothingness into two, one half forming the sky, and the other making the land. However his hand wasn't straight, thus creating mountains and valleys. god said 'it was a mistake, but it's just as well'.

When god drew pictures on the land, grass and trees grew, and birds and animals came to life. god then created creatures that looked almost like himself, but he was concerned that they were too similar. So he colored their wings charcoal grey, and made holes in their halos. He named them 'Haibane' and then tucked them away in his mind. After that, god started over and made human beings that didn't have wings or halos, and this time, he was satisfied with his creation. Completely content, god...

God, despite his omnipotence, fell asleep. The Haibane, who were destined to be erased, were able to escaped from his mind. When god awoke, they Haibane were already floating in the sky. However, ever tolerant of mistakes, even his own, god decided to let the charcoal feathers and their tiny world be. so that is why the town of Glie is still floating somewhere today. Somewhere that is neither on the land, nor the sea.
