[He walked quickly but cautiously, occasionally lashing out to strike at one of the flying insects that tried to attack. Walking just one step too close to a tree, however, led three creatures to drop down around him.]

[They were vibrating and making a peculiar high-pitched sound...Lancer had a very bad feeling about that coupled with the earlier explosion. He probably only had a second to act--jump back himself or make sure Connla was a safe distance away.]

[Really, the choice was obvious. He stopped abruptly and shoved Connla as hard as his human body would allow, barely half a second before the three of them exploded.]

[The resulting burns would probably be the least of his problems, considering that the force alone knocked him back and against the wall of the nearest building.]
